Ever seen the movie “Good Burger”? You know the one with Keenan and Kel? Basically, a locally renowned burger joint (Good Burger) has to battle the newly built, state of the art Mondo Burger restaurant that just moved in across the street. Well, in terms of hip hop, industry vet Statik Selektah’s 100 Proof: The Hangover plays the role of Good Burger as opposed to other recent Mondo Burger-esque DJ/producer compilation albums.

Like the small establishment, “100 Proof” is superior to its highly processed competitors due to incorporation of natural ingredients. While some DJ’s and producers claim that their albums are the best because of big budget features and forced posse cuts, Statik opts for homegrown beats and “selek-tively” chosen emcees who would sound perfect over them. Case and point: on “Night People” Freeway’s flow blends perfectly with the beat like peanut butter and jelly. Even crazier is the combination of Colin Munroe, Wale and Bun B on “So Close, So Far” where all three artists cross genres to create a cool hip hop jam. Barn Buddy Game Online here. Production wise, the album has few missteps. Most notably is the overdose “Follow Me” where Smif-N-Wessun’s rhymes don’t blend well with Stat’s beat: both uninspiring.

Luckily that jam was a rarity on 100 Proof as the overall production is not only excellent but it serves a purpose – the instrumentals set a great backdrop for the album’s concept; getting drunk is fun, but the day after is when reality hits. The album is pure reality music with songs like “The Coast” painting pictures more vivid than IMAX. On the aforementioned Cali anthem, Statik crafts a beat so dope that you feel like you’re right there with the beaches and the Bloods. Using that as their canvas, Evidence and Kali paint a few art show worthy portraits. But with lines like “America’s favorite/ blunt blazin’/ rhyme writin’ maven/ rap’s Wes Craven/ a rose blossoming out of the pavement”, Fresno prodigy Fashawn makes the song an album highlight, painting a picture that would be placed in the Louvre. 100 Proof is the result of adding organic ingredients to a perfectly cooked mixture.

100 Proof (The Hangover) serves as Statik Selektah’s 3rd studio album with Spell My Name Right (The Album) (2007) and Stick 2 The Script (2008) preceding it. Statik Selektah is a proclaimed student of the game, having taken influence from the likes of DJ Premier and Pete Rock as heard in his production, and he usually uses his albums as a.

On Statik’s previous LPs, these natural elements were missing from the recipe, but this time around the DJ/producer has the right formula and delivers his best full-length yet. Combining the right voices with the right instrumentals as well as an interesting concept with a universal feeling, Statik Selektah cooks a well rounded meal of delicious hip hop.

And while the fries may sometimes be a little too salty (“Drunken Nights”), the naturally hot 100 Proof: The Hangover album will appease your palette more than any of that unhealthy Mondo Burger hip hop. 8.2/10 [starrater tpl=10] The Coast (feat Evidence, Fashawn & Kali) [audio:Night People (feat Freeway, Red Cafe & Masspike Miles) [audio:Eighty-Two (feat Termanology) [audio:http://kevinnottingham.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/16-statik_selektah-eighty-two_feat._termanology-beef.mp3].

Establishing his own spot among the ranks of East Coast hip-hop's seminal figures, DJ/producer Statik Selektah utilized his turntabling skills and ingenuity in PR and promotions to break some of the region's most promising artists, bearing his own influence on the national mixtape circuit. Born January 23, 1982 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Patrick Baril was exposed to production equipment at a very early age, tinkering with his parents' eight-track machine, cassette recorders, and turntable.

By middle school, he was already DJ'ing school functions, but he was inspired to be a true wheels-of-steel artiste after hearing DJ Premier scratch and mix records on Funkmaster Flex's Hot 97 radio show. Soon after, at 14 years of age, he purchased his first turntables and mixer. Calling himself DJ Statik (the 'Selektah' surname came later), he started to work clubs and private parties up and down the New England coast. In 2000, after living in New Hampshire, he moved back down to Massachusetts to enroll in the audio production program at Boston's New England Institute of the Arts. That same year, Selektah started putting out mixtapes, namely his Spell My Name Right series. With his mixtapes and DJ gigs, Selektah never passed up the opportunity to champion local hip-hop from Boston and the surrounding New England area.

In particular, Selektah was responsible for introducing fellow Lawrence, Massachusetts native Termanology to the East Coast, helming his Hood Politics mixtapes in the mid- to late 2000s. Managing all of these tasks became much easier when he established his own PR/marketing firm, ShowOff, in 2003. In 2006, he turned ShowOff into an official record label, with Termanology's Out the Gate LP as its first release. By this time, though, Selektah's prestige had grown considerably. His radio shows were playing in several places, from London to Mobile, Alabama; he produced beats for many artists, including G-Unit, AZ, and Joell Ortiz; and most importantly, the DJ dished out tons of mixtapes with big-name and up-and-coming artists, such as Nas, Q-Tip, John Legend, Royce da 5'9' (The Bar Exam, co-hosted with DJ Premier, a noteworthy standout), and Saigon. In fourth quarter 2007, Selektah finally got to promote himself and his beats, entirely producing his official Spell My Name Right debut album.

Stick 2 the Script followed in 2008, with guest rappers ranging from Jadakiss and Freeway to Q-Tip and CL Smooth. His 2010 effort, 100 Proof: The Hangover, featured East Coast veterans (Kool G Rap, M.O.P.), underground favorites (Talib Kweli, Evidence), and up-and-coming lyricists (Wale, Torae). The year 2011 saw collaborations with both Action Bronson (Well-Done) and Freddie Gibbs (Lord Giveth, Lord Taketh Away) as well as Selektah's fourth studio album, Population Control.

In 2012, he collaborated with Termanology under the name 1982, releasing an album titled 2012, and he also worked with Strong Arm Steady for the Stones Throw album Stereotype, as well as Bumpy Knuckles on the album Ambition. The Proposal, a collaboration with Ransom, arrived in 2013, as well as the guest-heavy Extended Play.

What Goes Around followed a year later with an even longer guest list that featured De La Soul, Action Bronson, Freddie Gibbs, and many more. Selektah's seventh album, Lucky 7, was released in 2015, with guests including Mick Jenkins, Royce da 5'9', Joey Bada$$, and others.

The following year, he collaborated with KXNG Crooked on the album Statik KXNG. In 2017, he released his eighth studio album, the appropriately 8, featuring guest spots from 2 Chainz, Action Bronson, Joey Bada$$, G-Eazy, and more. ~ Cyril Cordor • ORIGIN Lawrence, MA • GENRE • BORN January 23, 1982.
